LIVING YOUR LIFE ON PURPOSE means recognizing what God made you to do and doing it. I believe that we all instinctively know what our purpose is in this life. We get little clues along the way to push us towards our calling. Anything that you consistently gravitate towards and naturally do well is most likely your God given gift. I believe we are to take what we are given cultivate it and then use it to bless others. If we do this the financial rewards will follow. Whatever you are meant to be just be it! We are all put on this Earth for one reason and that is to love one another. In order to do that we MUST contribute to each other's lives in a positive way by sharing our God given gifts and talents.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
In 1996 Debra was at a crossroads in her life. After traveling the world as a member of the girl group, Vybe on Island Records, Debra’s music career came to an abrupt end when the management at Island Records changed and Vybe was dropped from the label with no warning.
After years of trying to secure a new recording contract and working temp jobs Debra was forced to abandon her dreams of being a recording artist and began the arduous task of looking for full-time employment.
In the summer of 1999 Debra went to work at Warner Music Group as an Executive Assistant. Her job at Warner Music Group was in the Information Technology department and had no bearing on her former career in the music business. Severely depressed and desperate to re-invent herself Debra dreamed of a life where she had the freedom to make her own schedule, pursue a career in music and eventually become a best-selling author.
In 2001(while she and her husband were in the process of purchasing their first home) Debra saw her opportunity. She knew nothing about purchasing a home so she began to ask questions and research the process. It quickly became apparent to her that most first-time homebuyers had no idea what it took to purchase a home. This fact seemed outrageous since the idea of homeownership was supposed to be the “America Dream.” She also came to the realization that although most of the adults in her family owned homes, but no one ever educated her on the process! It was then that she made the decision to become a real estate broker. She decided that her purpose would be to educate other first-time buyers about real estate finance and home ownership.
In 2006 (after earning a California Broker’s license), Debra took a leap of faith; quit her job and became a full-time real estate broker.
After two years in the real estate business, Debra realized that most first-time homebuyers couldn’t make it past the first step (credit qualification). No matter what their economic status a large percentage of her clients had credit challenges that did not allow them to purchase a home. After conveying the same information over and over Debra decided to put everything she knew about credit repair into an easy-to-read book. During the writing of the book Debra made a very personal discovery. When recounting her own financial history she discovered that many of her bad financial habits had resulted in her need to be accepted into a certain “class” of people, namely the celebrity circle she had been a part of during her time in the music business. This discovery is what gave rise to a complete re-vamping of the book to address the reasons why women in particular get into financial trouble and thus, “Girlfriend, Fix Your Credit” was born.
It is Debra’s mission to educate young people, (especially young women) about the importance of creating a well-rounded life plan that incorporates family, career and sound financial management. One of Debra’s favorite sayings is, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
Debra lives her life purely based on the spiritual concept of having complete faith in God for all things. She believes that we should prepare ourselves for success and look for “cues from God” when we are to take action towards fulfilling our life’s purpose.
Debra is currently a Broker Associate with Keller Williams Realty AV.
